When I was researching waxes for Drift Into Dusk, I quickly discovered that not all candles are made the same.
Many large candle brands use paraffin wax, a by-product of the petroleum industry. It's inexpensive, easy to manufacture at scale, and widely available. There's nothing unusual about that; many popular candles on the high street are still made with paraffin today.
But for me, I wanted to create something a little more thoughtful.
Drift Into Dusk was never about producing the cheapest candle possible. It was about creating products that people could genuinely enjoy as part of their everyday rituals. A quiet morning coffee, an evening bath, or simply a few moments of calm at the end of a busy day.
That's why I chose a natural coconut wax blend.
A Cleaner Burn
One of the things coconut wax is known for is its clean burn. When properly wicked and cared for, it produces very little soot compared to many traditional waxes, helping keep both your candle and your home looking cleaner while creating a more enjoyable burning experience.
Exceptional Fragrance Throw
A beautiful fragrance should feel effortless. Coconut wax is excellent at holding and releasing scent, allowing fragrance to gradually fill a room without feeling overpowering. Rather than hitting you all at once, it unfolds naturally as the candle burns.
A Longer-Lasting Candle
Because coconut wax burns at a lower temperature than many traditional waxes, it tends to last longer. That means more evenings curled up with a book, more slow mornings, and more opportunities to enjoy your favourite fragrance.
A Beautiful Finish
Coconut wax has a luxurious, creamy appearance that I absolutely love. It creates a smooth, elegant finish that makes each candle feel special, before it's even lit.
A More Thoughtful Choice
The coconut wax blend I use is vegan, cruelty-free, and made from renewable plant-based ingredients. No candle is completely impact-free, but choosing a natural wax blend felt like the right decision for both my products and my customers.
Why Natural Wax Candles Often Cost More
One question I occasionally get asked is why handmade natural wax candles can cost more than candles found in supermarkets or discount stores.
The simple answer: the ingredients cost more.
Natural wax blends are typically more expensive than paraffin, and they can be more challenging to work with. Add in high-quality fragrance oils, small-batch production, hand-pouring, labelling, packaging, and safety testing, and the costs quickly add up.
Could I make a cheaper candle? Probably. But that would mean compromising on the ingredients and quality that matter to me.
Every decision I make for Drift Into Dusk comes back to the same question:
"Would I be happy to burn this in my own home?"
If the answer isn't yes, it doesn't make it into the collection.
Because creating a beautiful fragrance is important. But creating products with care, intention, and quality at their heart is what matters most.
